The Saddest Music I Have Ever Heard

The saddest music I have ever heard was composed by Tchaikovsky. It's the 4th Movement of his Symphony No. 6, the "Pathétique".
The music opens with a loud lament. Then, it seems as if we take a breath, trying to get a peaceful feeling, but instead, the music becomes more and more agitated. Then, the sadness returns. The downward flowing melody is like a sigh. The violins play the melody, which becomes lower and lower, ending on their open G string, the deadest sound in the world. Meanwhile, the bassoons explore the lowest part of their register. We are now in the depths of despair.

The middle section is a tragic telling of our sadness. It is dramatic and emotional.

The end returns to music like the beginning.

I defy anyone to find sadder music than this.
